The Savior Comes with Power

A one-of-a-kind star guided the Magi from their far-away home to worship Jesus. Jesus is the one-of-a-kind Savior who shines on us with the brilliance of his love. We use a word from the language of the New Testament to describe this phenomenon: EPIPHANY. On the Day of the Epiphany, January 6, and on the Sundays after the Epiphany, the Bible shows us Jesus revealing himself as our Savior.
Children see the sun as nothing more than an orange circle in the sky, but when they grow up, they understand that the sun is a blazing fire that gives light and warmth to our solar system. On the Sundays in January and February, we will remember that Jesus is much more than a child in a manger. He is the Savior of the world who comes with power.

January 15 — Power to Save the World
After 30 years of quiet preparation, Jesus began his ministry on earth by being baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. At this baptism God the Father publicly acknowledged Jesus as the Savior of the world. At this baptism Jesus began his Savior-work by carrying the sins of the world into the cleansing power of baptism.

January 22 — Power to Lead Us to Follow Him
When Jesus calls people to follow him in faith, he doesn’t wait for an RSVP. He calls us with the power that is implicit in the gospel, the good news about his love. This is the power that compels us to follow him and believe.

January 29 — Power to Convince Us to Serve Him
Jesus’ call to follow him is always a call to serve him and others. But Jesus knows that his call to serve is impossible to accept; who would want to serve when service implies sacrifice and hardship? Jesus changes our hearts with his power and makes us eager to serve.

February 5 — Power to Impress Us with His Authority
The crowds who heard Jesus preach were amazed; unlike their spiritual leaders, Jesus spoke with conviction and he spoke convincingly. Of all the preachers the world has known, only Jesus has power to stand behind what he says and does.

February 12 — Power to Help Us in Trouble
Jesus’ main mission on earth was not to heal physical diseases, but he used his healing power to prove that he also had power to forgive and save. Jesus still exercises this power in our world; every day our hearts beat and our lungs take in air. Lift itself is a miracle of his love. The man who took on human form to save us cares about our bodies, life, and health.

February 19 — Power to Reveal Himself as God
What is behind the child born in a manger, the man who walked over the hills of Palestine, the man who endured rejection by his own people? How can anyone follow a man who was humiliated and subjected to death on a cross? Days before he entered Jerusalem to suffer and die, Jesus pulled back the curtain of his humanity and showed three of his followers his majestic and divine power. As we prepare to enter the season of Lent, we remember Jesus’ power and believe that he is the Son of God who goes forth to war!
